Wheat with the right protein content

07 July 2014

The protein content of wheat is the key indicator that reveals its quality. Soufflet Agriculture is implementing supply chain programmes that guarantee its manufacturing customers an optimal protein content.

The big millers are very mindful of the protein content of wheat they buy from us: for 90% of their supplies, they require a protein content of 11.5%, and increasingly, our export customers (Algeria, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, etc.) and animal feed customers are following the trend. The general demand for higher protein is a considerable challenge for us, because if a sample of wheat has a lower protein content than expected, its value will be reduced and it will be more difficult to sell.

Helping choose the best varieties

Soufflet Agriculture protects itself against this major risk by working at the earliest stages with plant breeders and farmers. In addition to advice it gives on best growing practices, every year our technical department conducts trials on new wheat varieties, analyses their yield, disease resistance and resistance to weather stress, and their quality characteristics.

This means that the range of seed we sell is very wide, and gives targeted protein content for the harvest, from 10 to 14.5%, which is its central selling point. Thus we stimulate varietal choice for farmers on this particular market requirement, at the beginning of the supply chain.

The Group’s presence across most of France is, in this respect, an advantage of the first order, enabling it to identify varieties best suited for production in different soil and climate situations. So we specify the types of wheat that it is best to grow in different areas in order to encourage farmers to use them. For example, high protein wheat (14.5% protein) in Loiret, biscuit wheat (11.5% maximum) on Champagne’s chalky soils, or feed wheat in Lorraine.

Improving performance

But Soufflet Agriculture does not stop there. To encourage our farmers to supply wheat of the best quality, we are developing offerings such as the Soufflet Optimum contract, introduced last autumn, which with a bonus per tonne rewards protein contents meeting our requirements. This both rewards the farmer’s work and is the best guarantee for our customers of getting wheat with a protein content that suits their needs.

Our approach

Right from the outset, the Soufflet Group developed itself in the wheat and barley industries by broadening the scope of its activities and acquiring more in-depth expertise from collection to transformation. Controlling all aspects of the production chain, in order to serve all its stakeholders, has always been our culture.
