Supporting growth in organic

02 September 2016

Committed for some years to organic, the Soufflet Group is now boosting its presence on this very healthy market.

The figures speak for themselves. In twenty years, 1.3 million hectares of farmland has been converted to organic and demand in France for products under the AB (organic) label has increased by nearly 10% a year. The Soufflet Group made its first incursion into this market in 2008 with the creation, in Malteries Soufflet, of an AB labelled malt line. To meet changes in consumers’ requirements, Moulins Soufflet has begun to make Baguépi organic flour and Soufflet Alimentaire has developed a complete range of products (rice, quinoa, bulgur, lentils) marketed in particular under the Vivien Paille brand.

The Group is now taking a new step, setting up an organic organisation and offer in its recently AB certified Soufflet Agriculture division (see below). The aim is to gain on this growing market, both to satisfy consumers’ requirements and to support Soufflet Agriculture’s farmer customers.

Soufflet Agriculture and its subsidiary Soufflet Atlantique have obtained AB certification, which allows them to market AB labelled inputs and products. The certification crowns more than six years’ investment in organic.

This is because more than two hundred farmers have decided to change their farms to organic, and many others are in the process of conversion. “The Group is aiming to support their approach by providing them with our expertise on seed, fertiliser and plant protection” underlines Clément Masson, Buying and Sales Representative. “In the medium term, Soufflet intends to become a major player in organic, in particular by going into new markets”.

Organic production in figures

  • Wheat: several hundred tonnes a year, for the Milling division (making Baguépi organic flour for craft bakers).Capture d’écran 2016-09-02 à 14.25.32
  • Barley: the Group produces 800 tonnes of organic malt for micro-breweries and undertakes the malting process for a number of brewers.
  • Pulses: 3,000 to 4,000 tonnes of organic rice and, 300 to 400 tonnes of pulses a year, mainly lentils, but also chickpeas and dried beans.

Our approach

Right from the outset, the Soufflet Group developed itself in the wheat and barley industries by broadening the scope of its activities and acquiring more in-depth expertise from collection to transformation. Controlling all aspects of the production chain, in order to serve all its stakeholders, has always been our culture.
